HOUSTON—In just a few months, Houston voters will head to the polls to choose the city’s next mayor. Saturday night, the candidates are all meeting up publicly for the first time to talk about the issues. But what exactly is the meeting?
Organizers call it a forum, but Mayor Annise Parker says it is a debate, and that distinction matters because one of her challengers, Ben Hall, has challenged her to six televised debates. So far, the mayor has only agreed to one, which has yet to be scheduled.
Saturday’s event is being hosted by the Baptist Minister’s Association of Houston and Vicinity at the J-Roberson Family Life Center.
The forum is open to the public and also includes candidates Victoria Lane, Don Cook, Keryl Douglas and Eric Dick.
The forum comes at a time when Parker and Hall are launching television ads calling each other out. For now, it appears the fight is mostly between those two.
