A Republican Party organization in northeastern Pennsylvania is facing a headache after a man with longstanding ties to white supremacist groups was elected to a low-level party position on the strength of a single write-in vote — his own.
The Luzerne County Republican Party says it doesn't want to be associated with 41-year-old Steve Smith, of Pittston, but might not be able to get rid of him.
Pennsylvania Democrats spread word last week of his April election, linking to a report by the Southern Poverty Law Center that described Smith's associations with white supremacist, skinhead and neo-Nazi groups.
Smith says he will fight any attempt to oust him and rejects the white supremacist label. He says he simply advocates on behalf of white people like the NAACP advocates for blacks.
