HOUSTON -- One of the great comeback stories in sports this year was that of University of Houston cornerback DJ Hayden who suffered a life threatening injury back in November.

Fast forward a couple of months and Hayden was selected by the Oakland Raiders as the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Hayden wasn’t in New York City when he got the call from the Raiders, instead, he was surrounded by family and friends at his home in Missouri City.

Soon after getting the call Thursday night, Hayden and his parents spoke to the media outside of their home.

When asked what this means for them, Hayden said, “We’re on our way.”

Back in November, Hayden took a helmet to the chest on the football field. The impact of the helmet tore a main vessel to Hayden's heart. Doctors said there was a 3 percent chance of survival.

Hayden has been cleared medically to play football and has no lingering health issues.

Hayden put things in perspective Thursday night saying life is not a guarantee and what’s happening to him now is a blessing.
