TEXAS CITY — Although police haven’t revealed a motive in Thursday’s deadly shooting, witnesses described a chaotic attack that sent them fleeing a duplex and hiding in closets as a gunman sought his target.
One man was killed and another was charged with murder after being treated for wound.
At 12:47 a.m., Texas City police received calls about shots fired in the 1200 block of Seventh Avenue North. At least one witness said the gunman was still inside the two-story duplex.
Officers found Danzel Campbell, 21, of La Marque bleeding in the street, Texas City police Capt. Brian Goetschius said. Campbell died at 3:13 a.m. at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City, said John Florence, a spokesman for the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police also found Corey Percy Becton, 19, at the scene and said he was shot as well, an apparent grazing wound to his neck. After receiving treatment at a hospital, Becton was booked into the city jail on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remained jailed Thursday afternoon on $140,000 bond. Police still seek a witness to the shooting, Goetschius said.
