HOUSTON – Authorities are searching for a suspect after he fired three shots at residents who caught him trying to break into cars in southwest Houston.

Investigators with the Houston Police Department said the incident happened earlier on Monday at an apartment complex in the 2900 block of Dunvale Road near Richmond Avenue.

Resident Ben Midulla said he saw the suspect trying to break into his older model Lincoln.

“It was obvious when he was walking up and down trying car doors. He wasn’t looking for cars that were his,” Midulla said.

In an adjacent parking lot, employees and residents confronted him trying to break into cars there.

Then the suspect fired three shots at them as he ran behind a black Honda to get past the gate of the parking lot. He took off heading south on Dunvale toward Richmond.

The apartment complex has surveillance cameras at every entrance. Security footage showed the armed suspect as he fled the scene.

“The whole idea is a community trying to come together,” Midulla said.

Police agree they can’t fight crime alone. However, they said chasing a suspect who might be armed is not a good idea.
