RICHMOND, Texas – A 2-year-old boy who was found face-down in a bathtub Friday has died, police said.

Jose Rodriguez, Jr. died after he was taken off life support at Texas Children’s Hospital on Saturday.

Police were called to Jose’s home in the 1600 block of George Avenue around 6:25 p.m. on July 20, 2012.

When they arrived, they found him on his back, unresponsive, near the front door of the house.

Family members said Jose had been playing that evening with another child in the house while his grandmother was cooking and his mother was in a bedroom.

The grandmother told police she heard a knock at the door, and when she went to answer she heard water running in the bathroom.

She looked inside and saw Jose floating facedown in the tub, which was full of water.

She told investigators that she immediately pulled him out, and she and Jose’s mother tried to revive the boy, to no avail.

He was rushed to Oak Bend Medical Center and was later transported to Texas Children’s.

An autopsy performed by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the cause of death was drowning.

The investigation was ongoing Monday.
