AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry has appointed Devon Anderson, Mike Anderson’s widow, as district attorney of Harris County.

Mike Anderson passed away earlier this month after a brief battle with cancer. Devon Anderson is an attorney and former partner of Anderson and Thomas PLLC. She is also former judge of the 177th Judicial District Court and a past assistant district attorney for Harris County.

Anderson will hold the office until the next general election in 2016.

"This is a tough choice, but I think what the governor was thinking was what would be a better candidate to stand for re-election, and would have to do it twice in a four year period—One to fill this unexpired term and then again in 2016," said KHOU 11 News Political Analyst Bob Stein.

Harris County Republicans said Devon Anderson was the obvious choice.

"Not only is she qualified, but she understood and appreciated Mike’s vision for the office. She’ll carry it on, but then she’ll add her own touch to it," said Republican Party Chairman Jared Woodfill.

Devon Anderson received a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from the University of Texas.
