HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- An off-duty sheriff’s deputy struck and killed a pedestrian in the North Freeway HOV early Tuesday, METRO Police say.
Houston TranStar reported the incident shortly after 5:30 a.m. near Airtex Boulevard.
The deputy, who works for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, was driving a white Honda coupe. METRO Police said the pedestrian who was struck was walking in the HOV and apparently did not get out of any nearby vehicles.
Initially Life Flight was called, but it turned around after the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Views from Air 11 indicated the Honda’s front and rear windshields were both smashed.
The investigation closed the HOV for most of the rush hour commute, and the freeway’s mainlanes were slow in both directions due to rubbernecking. The HOV reopened shortly after 8 a.m.
