Meat-cutting competition in Sugar Land helps raise money for troops

SUGAR LAND, Texas -- Some of the best meat cutters in the area were slicing and dicing in a competition in Sugar Land on Thursday to help raise money for troops in Afghanistan.

It was part of a fundraiser that reaches out to the men and women who protect our freedom.

Eleven professional meat cutters from the Texas Roadhouse chain were competing for a chance at winning $20,000.

To advance to the regional competition, two of the cutters had to finish the most steaks with the best cut in the least amount of time.

"This competition recognized all the hard work they do, working at 34-38 degrees, in a meat room and the specifications they do in making our steaks right," said Joe Landy with Texas Roadhouse.

The meat was being cooked and sold to raise money for the organization Tip of the Spear.

"Our mission is to support troops in the most desperate, austere, dangerous places in the planet," said Mary Williams with Tip of the Spear.

Texas Roadhouse teamed up with Tip of the Spear to provide meat that goes into lunches sold to the public for $8 each.

All the money raised supports our troops in Afghanistan with goody boxes containing everything from toilet paper to microwaves.

Enough lunches were sold Thursday afternoon to raise $12,000 for troops.
