LEAGUE CITY — League City’s oldest volunteer firefighter died Monday night.

At 92 years old, Art Hewitt was one of the oldest and longest serving volunteer firefighters in the state. He passed away in his sleep at his daughter’s home near Jasper.

Even after more than 60 years of service with League City Fire Department, Hewitt could still be found at League City’s Fire Station 1 every week.

Fellow firefighters said he helped train the younger fire fighters, worked on maintaining the station’s trucks and was an integral member of the department.
