LA MARQUE — A man facing eviction who put together a fake bomb to rob a bank in 2011 was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday.

Horacio Hernandez, 57, pleaded guilty to the Nov. 19, 2011, robbery of Regions Bank, 6408 Interstate 45, in La Marque, and testimony in his punishment hearing began Tuesday in Galveston’s 56th District Court.

Hernandez used a smoke detector, electrical wire and candles wrapped in tape and sent the fake device through the drive through at the bank with a note demanding $50,000. The teller sent about $6,200 back to the man, who drove off but was captured by La Marque police less than a mile away from the bank.
