LA MARQUE — The city’s building official ordered the electricity, water and natural gas shut off at a motel-apartment complex Friday, sending seven families scrambling for places to live.
The city manager said the complex is a danger to residents.
The owner complained the city didn’t give him enough notice to fix problems or a list of what needs fixing.
Ragbir Singh owns and manages the Highway Inn in the 4200 block of FM 1765 in La Marque. The complex has two buildings — one used as apartments and the other as a motel.
A fire destroyed a third earlier this year.
Singh said he had completed some electrical work in preparing to rebuild the third building and scheduled an inspection by Ana Tims, the city’s building inspector.
City Manager Carol Jo Buttler said Tims went to the complex Friday and during her inspection found a litany of code violations. There were so many that Tims found the complex to be unsafe to live in.
