HOUSTON – A student brought an unloaded BB gun and a Swiss Army knife to Katy Elementary School on Tuesday.
A student who saw the items informed the teacher, and the student who brought them was immediately removed from class and the items were confiscated by Katy ISD Police.
Here is an excerpt from a letter sent out to parents from Principal Leslie Smuts:
“At no time did the student make a threat towards other students. We have contacted the student’s parents and are dealing with this issue in the proper manner, including appropriate disciplinary action.”
I would like to applaud the student who alerted us to the fact that someone had brought prohibited items to school. Students are often the first line of defense when it comes to keeping our school safe, as they often have first-hand knowledge about what their classmates are doing. I ask that you use this incident today as a teachable moment with your child to help confirm with them the important role they play in keeping our school safe.
The safety of your child and every other child here at Katy Elementary is one of our highest priorities. With your help, we will continue our commitment to creating a safe, secure and conducive learning environment for your child.”
