GALVESTON — Apparently overcome by guilt, a defendant turned down a 15-year plea deal only to have a jury sentence him Tuesday to 65 years in prison for sexually abusing children.

Tyrece Lynn Cox, 29, pleaded guilty Monday to continuous sexual abuse of two of his girlfriend’s children, but he chose to have a jury decide his punishment. Anyone convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a child is ineligible for parole, defense attorney Lynette Briggs said.

Cox was apparently overcome by his own guilt when he made the decision to turn down the state’s plea, lead defense attorney Calvin Jackson said.
