HOUSTON—Fresh produce, food, and food trucks lined the reflection pond Wednesday outside Houston City Hall, to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the weekly farmer’s market.
More than 30 vendors came out to serve ready-to-eat or packaged to-go food from places that support sustainable, locally-sourced food.
Texans linebacker Brian Cushing was on hand to help serve up a meal with his friend, Underbelly owner, Chris Shepherd.
“I’m not very good, but I’m trying to learn,” said Cushing about his cooking skills. “But it’s something I’m definitely interested in.”
Shepherd, a critically acclaimed chef, said farmer’s markets help folks buy local produce and help local farmers.
“Wednesday is the perfect day to come out, bring a cooler with you, pack up veggies for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,” said Shepherd. “Eating locally, you can’t get any better than that.”
Good food also had people thinking about “doing good.”
The event was hosted by Neighborhood Centers Inc., Houston’s largest community development organization.
Organizers say it’s “For Good” movement is meant to inspire change.
Local band the Zydeco Dots also performed.
