HITCHCOCK — Friends and family gathered Tuesday at the scene of a deadly house fire, remembering a school board member whose body was found among the debris.

Officials used dental work to identify the body recovered from the Monday morning fire as Estelle Holmes, 66, a political activist and longtime member of the Hitchcock school board.

Clutching a bouquet of roses, Ryan Hodges of Santa Fe paid tearful homage to his grandmother by placing the flowers by the smoldering cinders.

“She was an angel,” Hodges said. He mentioned his grandmother’s faith in God. “I guess he just wanted her back.”

Hitchcock volunteer firefighters were called at 9:11 a.m. Monday to the 6100 block of Terrebonne Road, where they found Holmes’ two-story house engulfed in flames. Firefighters were unable to enter the house because it had collapsed.
