HOUSTON – Heavy rain and slick roads contributed to an accident that sent a Houston police officer to the hospital Friday.
Miguel Rosario had stopped to check on a minor accident involving two vehicles on the 59/Eastex Freeway near the Beltway. One car hydroplaned and crashed into another.
Debris from the accident, including a bumper, was creating a safety hazard on 59 so Rosario was trying to retrieve it.
A vehicle crashed into the back of Rosario’s patrol car and pushed the car into him, according to HPD.
Rosario, a 19-year veteran, was rushed to Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute by ambulance. He is being treated for broken bones and also lost some teeth. He is in fair condition.
John Fletcher and Ruben Campos were just a few feet away when the accident happened.
"I was freaking out," Fletcher said.
"I just hope he’s OK," Campos said.
The driver of the car was ticketed for failure to control speed. He told investigators that rain splash from a passing 18-wheeler made it difficult for him to see.
The southbound lanes of 59 were blocked while the accident was investigated, but later reopened.
