HOUSTON -- The city of Galveston is in a faceoff with the federal government over public housing and hundreds of millions of dollars are on the line.
Mayor Lewis Rosen claims the city can’t meet the deadline to come up with a plan to rebuild public housing damaged by Hurricane Ike. The deadline is Sept 1.
Housing and Urban development is threatening to block nearly $600 million in federal disaster assistance if the city fails to meet the deadline.
The mayor has proposed issuing rent vouchers instead.
