GALVESTON, Texas — Members of the family of Jack Johnson, the first African-American to win the heavyweight boxing title, will be in Galveston today to review plans for a park and statue honoring the island’s most famous native son.

The reception honoring Linda E. Haywood, of Chicago, Johnson’s great-niece and a spokeswoman for the Johnson family, will be at 3:30 p.m. today at the Old Central Cultural Center, 2627 Ave. M.
