GALVESTON, Texas – The brother of a local priest is dead and another man has been hospitalized after a pickup truck went over the seawall and struck two pedestrians Sunday morning in Galveston.
According to the Galveston Police Department, it happened just after 7 a.m. in the 2300 block of Seawall Boulevard.
The victim that died at the scene of the accident has been identified as Raphael Flajole, 62, of Lake Orion, Mich. St. Patrick’s Church confirmed that he is the brother of Father John Paul and was in town to celebrate his brother’s 50 years as a priest.
The second victim, who was transported to the John Sealy Emergency Room for treatment, has been identified as Shane Sabala, 48, police said. He is in serious but stable condition.
He has no relationship with the other victim prior to the accident. When police arrived at the scene, officers found a red Ford truck had gone over the seawall.
Witness said that the driver, identified as Kevin Wade Wilson, 49, turned west onto Seawall Boulevard from 21st Street and immediately began crossing all lanes of traffic. The truck then left the roadway directly in front of Murdoch’s Souvenirs.
Two victims, who were standing in front of the stairway at Murdoch’s Bathhouse, were struck as the vehicle left the roadway and came to rest on the sand.
Police said Wilson suffered minor injuries from the accident. He has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with bonds totaling $750,000.
Wilson is currently on probation for a previous narcotics conviction, police said. Cause of the accident under investigation and whether Wilson was intoxicated at the time of the accident is still being investigated.
