GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas—District 23 State Rep. Craig Eiland won a close battle for re-election Tuesday with 30,223 votes, or 54 percent of 56,082 total cast, beating opponent Wayne Faircloth, a Republican from Dickinson.

District 23 includes eastern Galveston County and Chambers County.

Faircloth received 25,859 votes. His strongest support was in Chambers County. He was one of a few Democrats who fared well in a region that voted strongly Republican in most races. He campaigned on his accomplishments while in office and encouraged voters to choose performance over party.

Eiland enjoys strong local support for his work on behalf of the University of Texas Medical Branch, the county’s largest employer, especially after Hurricane Ike in 2008.
