GALVESTON — A charity’s former treasurer pleaded guilty to stealing more than $75,000 from the nonprofit organization that supports families of children with cancer and blood disorders.
Lauren Michelle Howell, 34, was sentenced to six months in prison and upon her release will serve 10 years probation that requires her to pay The Rainbow Connection $75,740 in restitution, prosecutor Elizabeth Cuchens said Thursday.
Howell, who also is known by the last name Simon, pleaded guilty Sept. 7. At her Wednesday sentencing, Howell paid $20,000 in restitution, Cuchens said.
After serving six months in prison, Howell will be brought back to court where she’ll receive shock probation, Cuchens said.
“The judge will grant her 10 years probation with the idea she will pay the remainder of the restitution,” Cuchens said.
