GALVESTON — About 1,200 customers lost electricity Thursday, and police manned several intersections after a transformer fire broke a utility pole and sent power lines to the ground, officials said.

A roughly 4:30 p.m. transformer fire at 26th Street and Avenue Q burned a utility pole that then snapped and downed power lines east to 24th Street, said city of Galveston spokeswoman Elizabeth Rogers.

The outage affected City Hall, The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, nearby Seawall business and traffic lights, which police manned until the city’s traffic department placed stop signs at those intersections.
