GALENA PARK, Texas—A spokesman for the Galena Park Independent School District said students were evacuated early Monday after someone found something suspicious tied to a tree.

Authorities said someone found a suspicious cardboard box tied to the tree’s upper branches. It was reported around 9 a.m.

Students and faculty of Galena Park H.S. were moved to nearby Dement Field while authorities investigated.

Views from Air 11 showed an area near the high school blocked off by police.

“They’re on the field, they’re on those bleachers, and if fights break out and somebody falls, busts their head, I mean, God knows what these kids can get into. You cannot have two officers control a big crowd like that, that’s crazy,” said parent Luisa Perez, frustrated because she could not get her child. “They say, ‘yes,’ they say, ‘no,’ just back and forth, they don’t give a secure answer.”

A bomb squad removed the box shortly before noon. Investigators brought out a robot and a portable X-ray machine to see if it was a threat.  The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the package contained ribbons and did not pose a threat to people at all.

Authorities are now checking to see if this was a prank by students, as some social media postings have suggested.

Charges may be filed if it was a hoax, the sheriff’s office said.
