HOUSTON – The friends and family of a man who died last week in White Oak Bayou raised money on Saturday to pay for his funeral.

At Vara’s Sports Bar along I-45, they sold food by the plate.

Eric Cabrera, 18, went missing when his pickup swerved off a bridge on Fairbanks North Houston Road and plunged into the water. When the vehicle was retrieved, Cabrera was no longer inside.

Days later his body was recovered miles down the bayou. He was first believed to be traveling with a female passenger, but was determined to be alone.

Family friend Michelle Perez remembers him at his best.

“He was really funny,” she said. “Everything was like a joke to him. He was a good dad; a really good dad.”

Cabrera leaves behind a 2-year-old son. Neither investigators, nor witnesses, are sure what caused his truck to swerve off the road.

There had been heavy storms at the time of his early morning crash.
