DICKINSON, Texas — A leak from a truck hauling liquefied petroleum gas after a wreck, forced the closure of FM 517 between FM 646 and state Highway 35 on Friday.

The closure happened after the big rig collided with another care, David Popoff, the county’s emergency management coordinator said. The accident happened at about 12:30 p.m.

FM 517 between FM 646 and state Highway 35 in Alvin are closed to traffic, Popoff said.

Despite the head-on collision and the scene looking as if “bombs went off,” Popoff said there were only minor injuries as a result of the accident. A valve on the truck was damaged and is leaking the LPG-Propane, Popoff said.

The leak wasn’t from the main tank, rather the propane-fueled truck’s fuel tank.

The road was closed as fire crews worked to contain the leak but will remain closed as crews clear the wreckage and investigators find out what happened, Popoff said.

It was unclear how much LPG leaked out, but appeared to be a small amount.
