DICKINSON, Texas – A 40-year-old man died Wednesday morning after accidentally shooting himself in the chest, police said.
Dickinson police said they got a call from the victim, Duane Johnson, around 2:25 a.m.
Johnson told them his gun had accidentally discharged in the 3700 block of Medical Park Drive while he was putting on the safety.
Officers rushed to the scene and quickly located Johnson next to his vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was airlifted to UTMB in Galveston, where he died.
Police said Johnson had gone to his place of employment with his gun to check on the building after getting a call from the alarm company.
The building was secure, and Johnson was apparently in the process of leaving when his gun went off.
Police said the death appears to be entirely accidental, but the Galveston County Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy.
The investigation was ongoing Wednesday, pending the autopsy results.
