FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas -- A deputy constable struck a 16-year-old girl who was biking to school before sunrise Friday, Fort Bend County officials said.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. on Gaston Road at S. Fry Road.

A Precinct 3 constable was driving southbound on Gaston when he hit the girl with his pickup. Deputies said the girl went into the intersection on a red light and the constable had the right of way.

A spokesman for Fort Bend County said the girl, a ninth-grader, was on her way to nearby Seven Lakes High School when it happened.

A doctor happened to be at the intersection and helped the girl until paramedics arrived, officials said.

The girl was taken to the hospital by PHi air ambulance with serious head injuries.

"I'm saying a prayer for you, baby," one witness said as the helicopter took off.

County officials said Friday afternoon that the girl is in critical condition
