GALVESTON — Dan Rather — the man who invented modern TV coverage of hurricanes — returns to the island on Friday to help Galveston celebrate Arbor Day and raise funds for replanting thousands of trees lost to Hurricane Ike.

Rather, who gained national recognition here in Galveston for his reporting of Hurricane Carla in 1961, was the first broadcaster to provide live, on-location coverage of a major storm and the first to put a radar image of a hurricane on network television.

The National Weather Service wanted people to evacuate the island but weren’t having much luck, Rather said.
