Community members protest name of new HISD school

HOUSTON—Protestors showed up Thursday outside a new school being dedicated by the Houston Independent School District.

The people are upset over the name of Lockhart Elementary. The school was built on the former site of Turner Elementary.

The group is asking the district to honor both schools and the men they’re named after by calling the new building Turner-Lockhart.

“We want to establish the fact that Rev. Turner was an important member of this community, as well as Mr. lockhart, and we don’t want to lose the history and we want to teach our children that history is important,” said Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz.

Rev. George Turner was an African American church founder who also served as a school principal for many years.
