HOUSTON -- The Houston City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to $4.4 million to clear out a rape kit backlog that goes back years.

City officials say the plan is to hire outside contractors to examine 6,000 untested kits and DNA samples related to another 3,500 cases.

Officials say active cases will take priority, but Houston police estimate the backlog should be eliminated within14 months.
