HIGHLANDS, Texas – A 4-year-old boy is recovering at Memorial Hermann Hospital Sunday afternoon after nearly drowning at Banana Bend Beach, a popular swimming area off the San Jacinto River.
The child was swimming in a shallow area when he somehow got separated from his family and went under, witnesses said.
Another visitor was wading into the water when they had stepped on something underneath the surface, deputies said. It turns out that they had stepped on the child, who had slipped under the water.
A group of bystanders pulled the child to shore, deputies said. The child was then airlifted to the hospital where is now in stable condition.
