HOUSTON— EquuSearch officials say the body found floating in the Houston Ship Channel Thursday morning is that of a teenage boy who has been missing since Valentine’s Day weekend.
Antonio Saldivar, a 17-year-old junior at Houston Can Academy, told his mother he was bringing his girlfriend a teddy bear and watch on Valentine’s Day.
Saldivar borrowed his mother’s car that night but never came home.
The empty car was found smashed into a concrete beam early the next morning at the intersection of Navigation and Harrisburg. Saldivar’s shoes were still in the front seat. A wrecker driver told the family that the accident happened Saturday just before 4:30 a.m.
The accident happened about a mile from Texas Port Recycling where Saldivar’s body was spotted under a dock around 9:15 a.m. Thursday morning. An employee spotted the body in the water and notified management, who then called police.
The Houston Police Department said the body was hard to get to so the dive team was called in. They recovered the body and it was sent to the medical examiner for identification and to determine the cause of death.
There was no immediate word on how authorities were able to identify the body so quickly or what happened to Antonio after he disappeared on Valentine’s day.
Saldivar’s family said simply they wanted to thank EqquSearch, the volunteers who passed out fliers, searched, donated water and snacks.
Beyond that, they didn’t have any more to say and asked for people to respect their privacy.
