HOUSTON—You have probably seen Ellen or Oprah giving away gifts on their annual holiday episodes. Now a bank is getting in on the act.

At Eliot Elementary School on Thursday the K through 2nd graders could not contain their enthusiasm as they gathered in the cafeteria to decorate cookies.

There was a bigger reason why they were there, only they did not know it.

Thanks to the generosity of the BBVA Compass Foundation, all of the kids learned they would be going home with toys.

One boy said he was excited about his monster truck. A girl said she planned to use her new drawing kit to make a picture of Santa.

Many of the students’ families are in financial need.

“It’s very special,” said Rey Ocanas with BBVA. “We’ve had these kids kiss their toys, ask if they’re really theirs to keep, if they’re able to take them home.”

The foundation will give out toys to nearly 2,000 children by Christmas Eve.
