HOUSTON -- An abandoned motel that burned last week caught fire again on Wednesday morning, sending thick black smoke across the Eastex Freeway.

According to the Houston Fire Department, the blaze was reported shortly after 8 a.m.

Traffic on the freeway was slow at Tidwell in both directions due to the smoke. The northbound frontage road lanes were totally shut down as well as two northbound mainlanes.

By 9:20 a.m. the fire was under control and traffic in the area had improved.

No one was injured, although there were early concerns it could have spread to nearby homes.

“Well here we’re kind of fortunate that it’s kind of secluded, there’s some vacant lots surrounding it. But there’s always that threat of embers flying and for the fire to spread when you have heavy wind,” said Captain Ruy Lozano, Houston Fire Department.

Investigators say the building had been abandoned for some time. Some residents say homeless people stayed there, and they are very concerned over how this could’ve happened again so soon.

“Either there were hot spots or somebody’s still sleeping in there. It should’ve been investigated. The city needs to do better with these building,” said Early Green, resident.

The cause of both fires are under investigation.
