HARRIS COUNTY -- Houston has one of the highest burglary rates in the nation, and an attempted break-in on Tuesday is yet another example why.
Two suspects are in custody and another one is on the run after an attempted break-in at Stone Canyon Apartments on the 10900 block of West Road.
Police say it happened around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Investigators say a maintenance worker caught the suspects trying to push in someone's door. When they were confronted, the suspects said they were visiting a relative.
When deputies arrived, all three men fled to a nearby strip mall. Two of them were taken into custody.
Officials said they allegedly drove to the apartment complex in a car they stole hours earlier from Rene Ruffian.
“That's very scary,” said Rene Ruffian. “They steal your vehicle and they can do anything to your vehicle.”
It appears the suspects only broke the steering column in Ruffian’s car. They didn’t take anything from her vehicle, just needed to get where they had to get to.
The two suspects in custody have been charged with evading arrest, but other charges are likely to follow.
