(KMOV) -- An alarming photo circulated from one teen’s phone to the next, making rounds around multiple area high schools, and the people who prosecutors say was posing for the inappropriate picture shocked investigators.

“The issue here is the fact the daughter was 14 and the mother was clearly present and involved when the photo was taken,” said St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohmar.

Lohmar said he was certainly concerned about a photo of a mom and daughter, both topless in a hot tub.

The photo was sent around two high schools through the social media app called SnapChat.

“It certainly appeared that the picture was posed and it certainly had some sexual overtones,” said Lohmar.

The Wentzville mother was charged with misdemeanor child endangerment. Her face and name were concealed to protect her teenage daughter.

“I wasn’t posing I was getting out of the tub,” the mom said.

She showed News 4 the outdoor hot tub in question. She said it was her other teen daughter who took the photo and she never imagined it would get out.

“I was aware the photo was taken, and I told her at that second, please delete that photo,” the mom said.

Lohmar, though, said parents ought to know better.

“This was a mother who made a very poor choice, I don’t think she had any intention that this would blow up the way it did, but it did and she only has her poor judgment to blame for that,” said Lohmar.

The mom could face probation or up to a year in jail.
