NEW YORK -- Cursing at work probably happens a lot more than you think.

According to CareerBuilder.com, 51 percent of employees say a four-letter word has slipped out while on the job.

Staffing analysts said 38 percent of the time swearing was a factor for firing someone. Employers also said they would be less likely to promote people with “potty mouths.”

Lashaune Tisdale, of the Academy of Etiquette and Charm, said, “If you can't speak without using inappropriate language, then how professional are you really?”

Michelle Fish, CEO of Integra Staffing, said, “You've got to watch your e-mails, you've got to watch the way you speak to people -- your co-workers, your bosses, and your clients.”

Fish also said foul language can come across as aggressive and create a hostile working environment.
