NEW ORLEANS -- A man and an infant boy are dead after a shooting on the Crescent City Connection Wednesday night.
According to police, the two were riding in the back seat of a dark Honda sedan just before 9:00 p.m. in the 2100 block of General de Gaulle Drive, when someone in a dark colored vehicle, opened fire on the car.
Police say the 25-year-old man who has not yet been identified, was shot multiple times and died on the scene. His 7-month-old son, who was fastened in a carseat in the back seat, was shot once in the left side of his head. EMS transported him to the nearest hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The driver of the Honda and the front seat passenger, both women, were not physically injured in the shooting, and preliminary information leads detectives to believe the shooter and the 25-year-old father knew each other, and that this shooting was not a random attack.
“I've been crossing under yellow tape for decades, and it's difficult and disturbing every single time. But it was heartbreaking to see what was clearly a bullet hole in the side of a baby’s car seat," said Superintendent Ronal Serpas. "No family should have to endure the murder of a 7-month-old baby."
“Our detectives are doing all they can to gather information to identify those involved. But we need people who know something about this to call us. Simply put: it’s the decent thing to do. It’s the
right thing to do. And it's our most effective way to put an end to senseless violence," Serpas added.
No arrests have been made at this time, but police say that a black SUV may have been the vehicle that the gunmen were driving.
