ELIAZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WHAS11) -- An Elizabethtown father pleads guilty to killing his infant daughter while she was in his care.

Barry Williams walked into court Thursday afternoon, Dec. 19, prepared for what was to come next.

A young mother was in tears seeing the father of her baby admit to murder.

“We are hopeful too that this sends a message to the community that we are going to take these crimes against our children very seriously and if you hurt our children then you are going to pay the price,” Teresa Logsdon, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, said.

He plead guilty to wanton murder. His infant daughter had injuries consistent with "shaken baby syndrome."

Williams didn't give a statement in court but for a young mother who lost her baby this marks the end of a painful chapter.

“We had a conference with this case with the family they believed this to be a good resolution and I’m hopeful that this resolution will help them reach some closure as a family,” Logsdon said.

Under the plea agreement Williams will serve 20 years in prison but will be eligible for parole after serving 85 percent.

Williams will be back in court at the end of January for his formal sentencing.

His trial was set to begin in February and if he was convicted by a jury, Williams could have faced 20 to 50 years in prison.
