DENVER -- A little Colorado boy who dreams of becoming an astronaut one day is on a mission to save NASA.
Connor Johnson, 6, started a petition on the White House website after learning Congress is planning to cut funding from the space agency.
The petition calls for the government to "Increase NASA funding. So we can discover new worlds, protect us from danger and to make dreams come true. Increase the funding for NASA so that children can dream of exploring the universe. Science funding is the future of our country."
The petition was launched Nov. 29. In its first two weeks it received more than 17,000 signatures. The goal is to reach 100,000 signatures by Dec. 29, however.
As with other WhiteHouse.gov petitions, if enough signatures are obtained, it will be reviewed by the Obama administration, which will then issue a response.
