WESLACO, Texas (AP) — After visiting a Border Patrol facility in South Texas, Gov. Rick Perry said the number of immigrants being arrested has created an "untenable situation."
Perry spoke Monday at a Department of Public Safety regional headquarters in South Texas. He said that the border is not secure, adding, "This is an absolute humanitarian catastrophe waiting to happen."
More than 50,000 unaccompanied children have entered the U.S. illegally since October. Their number has overwhelmed the Border Patrol in South Texas and Perry says distracted them from other threats on the border.
Perry has authorized $1.3 million per week to DPS to step up patrols along the border.
