MIAMI (AP) — Twelve of the Miami Police Department's K-9s will soon have bulletproof vests, thanks to donation that will cover the costs.

Currently only two of the city's 18 police dogs have bulletproof vests.

El Nuevo Herald (http://hrld.us/1nlNqVG ) reports PetArmor and the nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K-9s are donating the money to cover the vests, which cost about $1,000 each.

Officials say three Florida K-9s were among the 18 that died in action in the United States last year. The K-9s were from Miami Gardens, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Leon County.

Miami uses K-9s to detect narcotics, explosives and currency. The 12 K-9s will receive training to get used to the vests.
