HOUSTON (AP) — A second convicted armed robber has been sentenced to prison over a Houston-area bank holdup in which police shot and killed a suspect.
A federal judge in Houston sentenced Justin Devon Hayes to nine years in prison. Hayes and Demontray Ward in December pleaded guilty to aggravated bank robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
Investigators say Hayes, Ward and a third gunman in April 2013 held up a Regions Bank in Humble (UHM'-buhl). Two bank workers were struck in the head.
An officer who witnessed the three armed men leaving the bank and trying to flee in an SUV opened fire, killing the driver. Hayes and Ward were arrested.
Hayes was sentenced Monday. Ward in March was sentenced to nearly 16 years in prison.
