CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — A 22-year-old woman has admitted in federal court that she was the driver of a pickup smuggling migrants through South Texas when it struck a tree and left one dead.

Federal prosecutors in Corpus Christi said Thursday that Karin Yamilec Aguilar-Melgor pleaded guilty to a smuggling charge for transporting workers in the country illegally.

Authorities say Border Patrol agents in February observed people getting into a Ford pickup on a rural road near Falfurrias (fal-FYOO'-ree-uhs). The pickup fled when the agents approached and was found about five miles away when it wrecked. One of the migrants in the vehicle later died.

Aguilar-Melgor has been in custody since her arrest.

The Houston woman is scheduled to be sentenced in October and faces up to 20 years in prison.
