FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A North Texas school board member has apologized for making disparaging remarks about a recently elected Muslim city council member.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports (http://bit.ly/1rEiDK8 ) that Keller school district board member Jo Lynn Haussmann had posted comments on Facebook criticizing turnout in recent local elections and saying "YOU NOW HAVE A 'MUSLIM' on the City Council!!! What A SHAME!!!!!"

The comments were in reference to Southlake Councilman Shahid Shafi, who was elected in May.

Haussmann called her comments "stupid" and said she called Shafi and apologized to him.

Shafi, a surgeon, called the comments "disappointing" but said they don't "reflect the mass majority of people in our society."

Shafi says Haussmann's comments are the first derogatory words directed toward him since he moved to the United States in 1990.
