AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Dentist Brian Babin has won the Republican nomination for the suburban Houston seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman.
Babin, of Woodville, easily beat Houston investment banker Ben Streusand during Tuesday's runoff.
The pair were the top-two finishers in a March primary that featured some 12 candidates —none of which won a majority of the votes cast.
Stockman is a congressional renegade known for inflammatory gun-rights comments and calls to impeach President Barack Obama.
Stockman originally filed to run for re-election to Congress. But he changed his mind in December, and instead unsuccessfully challenged powerful U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary.
Babin now faces Democrat Michael Cole, a 2012 Libertarian congressional candidate who sought his new party's nomination unopposed.
