HOUSTON (AP) — Harris County jurors have been told a 32-year-old woman was depressed and suicidal when she buried her infant son in mud near a bayou, smothering the 2-month-old.
Narjes Modarresi is accused of capital murder in the April 2010 death of her child.
Defense attorney George Parnham told jurors Wednesday that Modarresi suffers from bipolar disorder and never had a specific intent to kill, which is an element of capital murder.
Prosecutor Sunni Mitchell said Modarresi never formed a bond with a newborn "she never wanted and never loved."
Modarresi initially told police that two men had kidnapped her son as she walked him in a stroller.
If convicted, Modarresi faces life in prison without parole. If convicted of a lesser offense the punishment could range from 5 years to life.
