NEW YORK (AP) — President Barack Obama says Republicans have been captured by an ideology that tells them to say no to everything.

He says they cling to a rigid theory that the only way to grow the economy is to dismantle the government.

Obama says in the past that might have been an exaggeration, but not anymore.

Obama is speaking at a fundraiser in New York City benefiting the Senate Democrats. He says the GOP's main election strategy is to keep people from voting. He's referring to voter ID laws and other restrictions favored by Republicans.

But Obama is warning his party that Democrats have what he calls a "congenital disease." He says Democrats fail to show up to vote in midterm elections. He says, quote, "We have to break that cycle."
