AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A West Texas legislator has been sentenced to 15 days in jail after pleading no contest to drunken driving over a 2013 traffic accident in Austin.
State Rep. Naomi Gonzalez apologized in a statement and began serving her punishment Friday in the Travis County jail. The Democrat from El Paso, who failed in her March primary re-election bid, had no other comment.
Travis County Attorney David Escamilla says Gonzalez also paid restitution, underwent counseling and will lose her driver's license for 180 days.
Gonzalez on March 14, 2013, crashed her BMW into another car, which then hit a bicyclist. Gonzalez, the other driver and the cyclist all sustained minor injuries.
An arrest affidavit says Gonzalez had a blood alcohol level that was more than twice the legal limit for driving.
